CHAPTER 52

MARCH 22, 1999

1:00 P.M.

“Ain’t this the place where we pick up the shipments?” the Peace Stone lieutenant driving the van asked Shelton Booker.

The gang leader sneered. “Don’t concern yourself with ‘where’ we are. Just do what I tell you.”

At that moment Sly Merrill came out of the factory. In his drugged state he didn’t see the GMC van. Slowly, the chemist began making his way across the loading dock.

Booker and the gang member who had ridden shotgun got out of the van and advanced rapidly toward the factory. Sly heard their footsteps and turned around. When he saw them, his eyes went wide with terror.

“Hold it a minute, buddy,” Booker said in a non-threatening tone, as he closed the distance separating him from his intended victim.

It took only a glance for Sly to notice that the intruders had weapons down at their sides. Turning, he ran back toward the factory.

“Shit!” Booker hissed, raising his nickel-plated magnum. Lining up the front and rear sights of his revolver on Sly’s back, he pulled the trigger twice. The M-39 explosive rounds smashed into Sly and propelled him ten feet to slam into a brick wall. The discharged rounds sounded as if they had been fired from a howitzer. The gang lieutenant walking beside Booker was temporarily deafened, so he didn’t hear Bad Man say, “Those shots must’ve been heard for blocks. Somebody’s going to call the cops. We’ve got to move the body. C’mon, give me a hand.”

The dark-suited gang member stood in dumbfounded silence and stared quizzically back at his boss. Then the brown unmarked police car containing Officers Becker and Castigliano skidded to a stop behind Booker’s van in the factory parking lot. As the two Gang Crimes officers got out of the car, the gang member in the van, the one accompanying the trigger man, and Bad Man Booker all turned their weapons on the cops and opened fire.
